Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation have developed a partnership with a local Boxing Gym close to the City Centre. A meeting between Head of Foundation, Craig Shepherd, and Ric Bennett, partner of the newly named Wakefield Trinity Amateur Boxing Club, uncovered the impact that the gym already has within the community.

It provides an outlet for young people and adults to improve fitness, battle mental health issues and make new friends as well as improve their Boxing skills through sessions at the Peterson Road gym in Wakefield.

Wakefield Trinity Ladies Football Club, another new venture for the Foundation, have been training there since September for additional fitness.

Craig Shepherd said, “As a Boxing Club they already have an impact within their local community and have provided shelter and a positive focus for a number of individuals. It made sense to look at bringing them under the Wakefield Trinity brand and supporting them to potentially work with us on some projects locally, using Boxing and fitness sessions as a tool for improvement. Ric and Danny have worked really hard to ensure it’s a place people feel welcome at and there are many projects we can look to work together on.”

Ric Bennett added, “Myself and Danny didn’t open the gym to make money. We both work for a living and run the gym in our spare time. If we make anything it goes into improving the equipment, paint, updating fixtures and fittings, and anything else that’s required. For us this was about giving people somewhere they could go and get away from whatever troubles or issues they might have going on in their lives. Some people come to train because they want to be a Boxer, some come to get fitter or keep fit and some come just to pass the time because the alternative isn’t appealing. Working with Trinity after hearing from Craig about some of the projects they already deliver is exciting and it just made sense to join the family.”
