Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation

Max Sheard | My Summer Series story

Current scholarship and former Summer Series participant Max Sheard labelled the Foundation’s current development programmes as “competitive” after his involvement over 2021.

A Summer of Rugby League came to an end in August, and after multiple weekly training sessions, the programme was rounded off with three games, finally ending with a State of Origin battle at Belle Vue.

This, for some, offered a unique development pathway into a professional sport setting, with some of the participants involved in the programme taking the step into Wakefield Trinity Scholarship side for the 2021/22 season.

For a handful of our participants, this dream became reality, and Max Sheard hopes his short journey into Rugby League is just the start of this life in the sport.

“I was over the moon [when I got picked for Scholarship],” he said.

“It has been a lifelong dream to play Rugby, and I believe that this is just the start. I also felt like all my hard work had finally paid off.”

Spotted by our Talent ID staff, Max’s Wakefield Trinity journey started on our Summer Series programme in July, training and playing with the Foundation’s experienced staff members.

This offered development in a unique setting for our community players, something that Max found incredibly useful.

“I gained a lot of confidence because the coaching staff split everyone up so everyone had to speak to new people.

“I think this is one of the best ways to get into a scholarship because everyone there is for the same reason, so it’s very competitive and you get to experience what it will be like if you were to get a spot.”

This is a lifelong dream for some players and is just the start of their development pathways into Rugby League, something Max is incredibly excited to get his teeth into.

“I would love to, hopefully, be the starting loose-forward at the club someday.

“Even just to get a starting spot for the scholarship and academy would be incredible.”
