Day Seven of our Wakefield Trinity Advent Calendar sees us look back on the launch of our first-ever Wheelchair RL side earlier this year.
After already having a physical and learning disability sides, the Foundation embarked on a new journey within the Rugby League world when we launched our Wheelchair side in May 2021.
Newly appointed Gavin Dobson came in as the side’s head coach, with the first training session including England internationals Lenny Izzard, Wayne Boardman and Ewan Clibbans.
Even though our Wheelchair side came to fruition in May, it was actually December 2020 in which the funds became available, with the Foundation being accepted to receive funding through #CreatedBy RLWC2021’s Capital Grants Programme.
This offered a good foundation for growth, with players of all abilities attending the first session at Woodkirk Academy.
Now, with a wheelchair event added to next year’s World Cup rota, the emphasis put on disability has rocketed in 2021, something the Foundation hope to add to in the coming year.
