On Day 18 of the Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation Advent Calendar, we take a look back at how we have supported St Catherine’s Food Bank as they approach the Christmas period.
Following on from the success gained from last year’s Big Feed, the Foundation thought it was important to offer something back to the community over the winter months.
With the dark evenings and cold weather settling in, this time of year can be difficult for many families, and we are proud to tag onto the great work St Catherine’s Church continue to do throughout the calendar year.
With this in mind, over the past couple of weeks, the Club and Foundation have been collecting food in large numbers, with supporters dropping items off at both the stadium and club shop.
Following the collection, members of Trinity’s first team, James Batchelor and Yusuf Aydin, single-handily delivered the parcels over to the food bank.
This further shows the organisation’s support of the community over the cold, winter months.
Speaking after the drop, Head of Foundation, Mark Brennan, said, “As a club and Foundation, it is important we support our local community and what better way to do this than working with a local food bank to provide support for the most venerable at Christmas time.
“I want the Foundation to be at the heart of the community and we will look to build on this going into 2022.”
While, Angela Jones, of St Catherine’s Food Bank, followed, “The run-up to Christmas is a particularly busy period for St Catherine’s and relies heavily on our wonderful volunteers to distribute the food parcels,” she explained.
“The added pressure of trying to find the money to buy presents on top of what is a never-ending concern about how to make ends meet. This time of year can put extra pressure on people who are already trying to budget, worrying about food insecurity to meet a basic standard of living.
“St Catherine’s food bank would not be able to support our community without the generosity of our donors. The community’s kindness continues to overwhelm us.”
