Trinity take on Wolves in a ‘World First’ for Women’s Football

THIS SUNDAY Wakefield Trinity Ladies Football Club will play against the newly named Warrington Wolves Women in a pre-season friendly prior to the start of the Women’s Football season.

In March 2019 Wakefield Trinity Ladies became the first elite alternative sporting brand to enter the realm of Women’s Football, playing in the North East Regional Women’s Football League Southern division where they placed second until the global pandemic halted proceedings.

It was August of 2019 that Warrington Wolverines formed a close-knit partnership with the Wolves Foundation before effecting the name change officially in the off-season. Once able to pencil in friendlies the two teams were set to go head to head, the first time two elite brands have done so that derive from a different sport – Rugby League.

Both teams have recruited well and will be looking to achieve promotion in the coming season with Trinity having secured a number of former FA Women’s National League experienced players, among them Ugandan international, Jean Sseninde.

Jean arrives from Queens Park Rangers Women and had previously played for Crystal Palace Women also and will be looking to make her mark in northern England.

For Warrington Wolves Women, their pre-season has given huge hope for the coming season, having lost narrowly to Wigan Athletic and drawn with Crewe Alexandra and Merseyrail LFC, all of which are placed in higher divisions.

Meanwhile, Trinity have succumbed to FC United of Manchester, Hull City and Middlesbrough in three extremely tough encounters providing plenty of optimism for the coming campaign.

There are always plenty of good-natured fixtures between the two whether it be Betfred Super League, Physical or Learning Disability Rugby League or the Betfred Women’s Super League and this will be no different.

Although spectators are now allowed at limited levels following the FA announcement today, we are unsure as to whether the game on Sunday will be open to viewing at this stage. Further information will be provided as soon as clarity is received.
